Google is bringing back the technology behind its Glass headset only this time the user base will be of a very different kind. From later this month the search giant will begin rolling out a specially designed version of the headset specially designed for the training of guide dogs.

The redesigned Glass will still be tied to a custom app being rolled out on Samsung’s Galaxy S6 smartphone containing a number of exercises such as how to recognise crossing signs, when it is acceptable to smell other dogs and how to interpret human behaviour as benign or threatening. Correct responses are rewarded with an automated voice saying ‘good dog’ and displaying an image of a bone on the Glass’ monocle. Incorrect responses are met with a buzzing sound audible only by canines along with a command to sit.

“We are very excited about this latest development in assistive technology,” wrote Glass project lead Jeremy Stinson in a blog post. “The technology behind Glass wasn’t dead, just hibernating and we felt the time was right to wake it up and apply it in a novel way.”

Samsung’s Bud Cortlesby added in a press release: “Samsung is delighted to announce the release of our Galaxy S6 smartphone for the assistive technology space. Our dedicated research and development arm has been working on projects such as the new assistive app for some time and we look forward to seeing a new Glass make an appearance on our streets. At last, we have found a demographic that won’t feel ashamed to wear these things in public. Mostly, we’re just happy to excel in a space Apple has no interest in.”

A spokesperson for Samsung refused to confirm plans for a follow-up device using Virtual Reality.
