Residents and visitors to Dun Laoghaire can now avail of free Internet access following the introduction of public Wi-Fi.

The new system – managed by the Dun Laoghaire Business Improvement District (BID) Company and operated on infrastructure provided by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council – uses Airfiber technology over a 2Gb/s connection.

The service will be available over a 1.4 square kilometre area encompassing the entire town.

The joint initiative was trialled last year to welcome the arrival of the 4,000 passengers and crew who visited Dún Laoghaire Harbour aboard the Queen Mary II liner. Due to the success of the project, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Dun Laoghaire BID joined to make the service a permanent additiont to the area.

This is one of a series of new projects designed to make Dun Laoghaire a smart town. To date new technology has been employed to manage public parking space and, by the end of this year, litter bins.

Speaking at the launch, An Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Marie Baker said: “Today’s announcement is a great example of what can be achieved when a local authority and the business community work together… It is further proof that this Council is committed to working with the business community and other partner organisations throughout the County to deliver the best possible services to the community.”

BID chairman Don McManus, said free public Wi-Fi is a prerequisite to ensuring visitors keep returning to the town: “Free public Internet access is a prerequisite in this digital age for both residents and visitors. Nearly 9,000 people live just a 10 minute walk away from the town centre, with a further 135,000 just a 10-minute drive away. Thirty-four percent of Dun Laoghaire population is under 30-years-of-age and only 17% are over 65. We need to cater for this smart, digitally savvy audience.”
