The Ducati Corse racing team has developed a new information technology strategy with EMC to support its motorcycle racing in the 2014/2015 season. Supporting efforts in both MotoGP and World Superbikes series, the new strategy will allow Ducati Corse to better capture, process and derive real-time intelligence from racing data.

From this month, Ducati will use an EMC Isilon scale-out Network-attached Storage (NAS) solution to consolidate, manage and analyse its performance data, including engine fluid-dynamics, test archiving and bike telemetry. The platform is central to Ducati’s data-led approach to racing and will allow it to discover valuable insights that will ultimately contribute to faster lap times.

Ducati has a wealth of performance and racing data, having competed in the premier motorcycle class, MotoGP, since 2003. Taking one rider and manufacturer title in 2007 with Australian Casey Stoner, the Bologna factory has never quite returned to that level of form. However, with the recent arrival of principal Luigi ‘Gigi’ Dall’Igna from rival Aprilia, the team’s form has improved with impressive performances from lead rider Andrea Dovizioso and satellite rider Andrea Iannone, though a win in 2014 has remained elusive. In the production based racing series World Superbikes, Ducati is the most successful manufacturer ever, taking titles with riders such as Carl Fogerty, Neil Hodgson, James Toseland and Troy Baylis. However, since its introduction of the radical 1199 model, Ducati has struggled for consistent race winning form.

Ducati team members will be able to access and share information stored on Isilon through EMC’s Syncplicity solution, an enterprise-grade online file sharing and mobile collaboration tool

With the new solution, Ducati team members will be able to access and share the information stored on Isilon through EMC’s Syncplicity solution, an enterprise-grade online file sharing and mobile collaboration tool. This enables data files to be securely shared across a variety of devices, including mobile, in a manner that complies and is compatible with Ducati’s existing IT infrastructure. Through Syncplicity, relevant team members will be able to access and share the information they need, when they need it, in the pits, on the grid and during the race, helping to create more efficient and effective operations and communications within the team.

“With the 2014 season now underway, we are excited to have EMC join the Ducati racing team,” said Roberto Canè, electronics systems director, Ducati Corse Division. “We believe that its data solutions will enable us hone our machines and our approach to racing, helping us to achieve great things this year. We look forward to working with the EMC team and seeing the difference their technology makes.”

“Big data analysis is playing an increasingly important role in a wide range of disciplines,” said Marco Fanizzi, managing director and general manager, EMC Italy, “but the sporting world gives us some of the best and most accessible demonstrations of the true power of this convergence of data and analysis. By collecting as much data as possible from as many sources as possible — and then mining that in real-time to uncover precious insights — organisations such as Ducati can gain the agility and genuine competitive advantage that will help to keep them at the forefront of their field. We are excited to be working closely with Ducati in this way, and look forward to celebrating success together on the podium in the months ahead.”

As well as the technology solutions, EMC has also said that it will be supporting Ducati through direct sponsorship of its MotoGP and Superbike World Championship campaigns, which will see its logos featured on Ducati’s race-day bikes as well as on team vehicles and associated marketing.
