Find out information about films, TV programmes, actors and more
There are various web sites dedicated to reviewing films and television programmes, but IMDb is by far the largest and most popular. This iPhone app bring the power of the web site to your mobile enabling you to quickly read film reviews, view trailers and find out about actors and directors wherever you may be.
With access to a database of more than 1.5 million films and TV programmes, you can quickly find out details of cast and crew as well as reading reviews of what other people think. You can also browse photo galleries, watch movie trailers and accessed links to buy films on Amazon.
IMDb is a web site of colossal proportions, but the transition to the small screen has been a smooth one. Navigation and search is made incredible simple and the customisable home screen shortcuts make it possible to jump to your favourite sections quickly.
There is a strong US bias to the box office listings so the app is not of much use in the UK for checking cinema times, but as an informational tool it is second to none.
New 3.1 features include:
- Titles available on Amazon Prime feature a link to watch if the Amazon Instant Video app is also installed (iPhone/iPad)
- Special Oscars® section: list of nominees and photos from the red carpet and ceremony and live winners on iPhone and iPad during the ceremony
- Recommendations: tap on the “i” in the corner of the poster to see why it’s recommended for you, rate the title if you’ve seen it, or indicate “not interested” (iPad)
- Improved accessibility for TV episode navigation (iPad)
- Updates to side navigation (iPad)
- Bug fixes include episode picker in VoiceOver (iPad)
Final Verdict: A superb app which is only let down by the fact that the cinema and box office information is US-centric.
