Qimo is a Linux distribution for children. Based on Ubuntu 10.04, Qimo has wallpapers and icons that are appealing to children. It also contains a good range of educational and plain fun software. These include the Linux educational stalwarts like TuxPaint, TuxMath, gCompris and Childsplay. There are also more mainstream programs included, like music and video players, a text editor and the Firefox web browser, making this suitable for a wide range of ages. The desktop's look can be tailored to suit different ages, if you have children of different ages just set up a user account for each to give them a suitable experience.
Qimo uses the XFCE desktop environment, which is light on system resources compared with Ubuntu's GNOME. Younger users won't need all the features GNOME offers and the lightweight environment means it will run well on an older computer - after all, setting up your old computer for the kids is one of the reasons given for getting yourself a new one.
If you want to be able to use the same computer for adults and kids, this is possible with Qimo because it is based on Ubuntu, just install Ubuntu for yourself and then add the qimo-session package to install all the Qimo software, wallpapers and icons, so you can have different logins that give either Qimo or a standard Ubuntu desktop.
