Dataplex has opened a €23 million data centre in Dublin that is claimed to be the most energy efficient in Ireland.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny will officially open the facility later today that it is expected to create 25 new jobs in the coming years. A second phase of development of the B10 facility is already underway and will triple the facility’s capacity.

Dataplex, which is led by CEO Eddie Kilbane and Chairman Colm Piercy, delivers high power density and leading power efficiency wholesale co-location and private suites tailored for corporations, internet service providers, managed services providers, banks and multinational IT enterprises.

The Dataplex data centre is claimed to be the greenest in Ireland and was designed, manufactured, supplied and engineered by Irish companies. The investment represents the level of demand here that has grown up over recent years as the country has become one of the leading data centre hubs in Europe, including global-scale data centre investments from Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Amazon and HP.

Chairman Colm Piercy described how funding for the project had been secured through Irish equity investors and RBS Group. "In its current phase, Dataplex will have invested in excess of €23 million into our B10 facility in West Dublin. This demonstrates the commitment of Dataplex, the management team and the investors who are supporting this project. This Dataplex facility is the greenest and most environmentally friendly data centre anywhere in Ireland, and one of few market leaders in Europe, of which our team are extremely proud."

According to Dataplex CEO Eddie Kilbane, the second phase will now see the overall capacity triple at the B10 facility. "With investment now in place for Phase 2 here in Dublin, we will deliver ongoing innovation and tailored market-shaping facilities. We are also developing new data centre facilities elsewhere in Europe, specifically, in London and Malta, which will be available for clients to move in during 2014."

"The outlook for Dataplex and other data centre operators is extremely positive when we see the ever increasing demand for large scale co-location and persistent drive towards hosted and cloud services, both in Ireland and internationally. From a location point of view, Ireland is ideally suited to further investment by Dataplex due to the reliability of energy supply, fibre connectivity, helpful climate and overall business environment" said Kilbane.

The energy efficiency claims are based on a PUE rating of 1.25. The facility also uses free air cooling, taking advantage of Ireland’s climate to keep energy consumption low.

Despite the low energy consumption rating, power density is high to meet future needs, with 1.5 to 8 kW/m2 available. There is a total of 2,500m2 of IT space available, with diverse connectivity to the T50 network. There are more than 15 adjacent carriers available to the carrier neutral facility that overall has an 8MVA power supply.

The first customer, Continent 8 Technologies is already in place.

CEO of Continent 8 Michael Tobin said at the launch that of the nine sites it has around the world, the Dataplex B10 facility in Dublin was the most technologically advanced.
