The Battle of Clontarf is about to get a live Wiki treatment.

16 April 2014

The 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf takes place on Saturday 19 April and to mark the occasion Wikipedia is supporting the first ever Irish live Wiki editing event in Dublin’s Science Gallery from 2-5pm.

As the Battle’s Wiki page gets updated in real time to refelct the events of the day, there will be also a blow by blow re-enactment on Twitter (@1014retold).

Organisers 1014retold are seeking volunteers to participate in the Wiki live editing event.

The Battle of Clontarf took place on 23 April 1014 and resulted in thousands of deaths on both sides, including that of Brian Boru following his victory over the forces of Sitric Silkenbeard of Dublin and the King of Leinster, Mael Morda mac Murchada.

Described by comedian and proflific Twitter user Dara O’Briain as reading like “a sort of Irish Game of Thrones”, the Twitter feed will offer different perspectives on the battle from a variety of characters, including Brian Boru, Mael Morda, Sitric, and some lesser known participants.

Alan Doherty of the 1014retold project said: “It’s fantastic to be involved in Wikipedia’s first Irish Edit-athon event, especially as we’re working on the Battle of Clontarf wiki entries for the 1,000th anniversary. The Battle was a culminating event in Irish history and we’re hoping to bring it to life on social media to enhance understanding of its significance.”
