Origina, an Irish IT services specialist, has completed the design and implementation of a new virtualised environment for Lakeland Dairies. The integrated solution has enabled Lakeland to reduce the risk of downtime, cut costs, lower carbon emissions and improve delivery times throughout.
Lakeland is Ireland's second largest dairy co-op, processing over one billion litres of milk annually. With HQ in Cavan, the group has over 600 staff at five locations in Ireland north and south and in Britain.
Origina consultants, in partnership with Lakeland's IT team, designed and installed a Compellent storage solution. Among the benefits
• the number of servers is cut from 35 to two, with two more at a nearby site for disaster recovery
• there have been 70% savings on power, cooling and electricity costs
• all Wintel-based disaster recovery has been reduced from five days to under two hours.
The new setup includes two IBM servers to run the new virtualised environment, SAN storage from Compellent, along with Microsoft's HyperV and System Center management software.
Origina's Marc Flanagan, business development director, said: "Lakeland Dairies has become one of Ireland's most successful food production companies by placing technology and innovation at the heart of its business."
Lakeland's IT manager, Turlough Farrelly, notes: "The new architecture is easy to manage, resilient and ensures all of our systems, servers and data are always highly-available."
