Online retailer Komplett has launched a Teen Safe Computing campaign in conjunction with ChildWatch.ie, a leading Irish organisation in the area of child safety online and authors of the recent Barnardos report Three Hazards - Child Protection in the Electronic Age.
Komplett is sponsoring free seminars in secondary schools in which teenagers in transition year and above are given a frank assessment of illegal activity on the web relating to children, its ramifications to their personal safety, and advice on how to combat this.
The company is also distributing informational leaflets with all PC and notebook orders, and making more information available online.
"The biggest problem in getting practical advice across to teenagers on the topic of internet safety is that they feel like they're being talked down to," said Aaron McKenna, country manager of Komplett Ireland.
"These seminars take the approach of treating them like adults and exploring the real issues of illegal activity on the net and how this affects children and teenagers in a sensitive manner, getting their attention to put across some simple and practical advice to protect themselves from threats ranging from identity theft through cyber bullying and up into the realms of avoiding online sexual predators."
