Blackrock Castle Observatory enters International Year of Astronomy

Stargazing tech makes classroom debut

Education & Research | 19 Jan 2009 :
Star gazers and planet watchers in schools nation-wide are in for a year-long feast of discovery, adventure and learning, much of it to be enjoyed without having to leave the comfort of their classrooms.

Interactive whiteboard suppliers, Promethean Ireland, has teamed up with Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork to bring the International Year of Astronomy into the classroom in Ireland's schools.

The teams at Promethean Ireland and at the observatory will use the latest ICT to bring astronomy into classrooms in schools throughout Ireland through online streaming.

Schools with Promethean boards will be able to view major events as they happen at Blackrock. Working together, they will encourage more schools to visit the observatory and revel in the wonder of the complex universe we live in.

Commenting on their involvement in the joint venture, Marketing Manager at Promethean Jessica Murphy said: "We are delighted to be involved in this major year of education of our solar system and science and we are looking forward to working with The Blackrock Castle Observatory on a year full of exciting, nationwide activities and bringing the stars and planets into the classrooms of schools throughout Ireland."
