Trend Micro and UPC have begun a programme of talks to mark Safer Internet Day, a Europe-wide initiative promoting responsible use of online technology. This year’s theme, Connecting Generations, invites people of all ages to "discover the digital world together… safely".

The Connecting Generations component looks at the reach of the Digital World across all age groups and cultures and encourages families to work together to stay safe online. Tech savvy youngsters can teach their elders how to use new technologies, while grandparents can draw on their life experiences to advise younger generations on how to stay safe online.

Trend Micro staff are holding workshops for parents and teachers in primary schools across Ireland. For secondary schools transition year students will be taught how to pass on information to schoolmates using a peer-to-peer style of presentation. Over 60 schools have subscribed to the programme and information and training sessions will be organised in the coming weeks.

Lastly, a What’s Your Story competition invites young people from seven and up to write a poem, song, story, draw a picture or create a video about safety on the Internet. The winner will receive a grand prize of €3,000 with a school runner-up prize of €1,000 and three individual runner-up prizes of €500 each. Entries may be submitted from 7 February, and the competition closes on 3 April (for more information visit www.trendmicro.ie/whatsyourstory).

For its part, UPC has selected 12 staff to deliver talks to classes around Ireland. All pupils attending the Safer Internet Day Talks in Schools will be given an e-safety pack produced by in association with Webwise, containing a parents’ guide, games and stickers.

Anna-Maria Barry of UPC Ireland said: "This is our fifth year of involvement with this important initiative. Our UPC volunteers will be interacting with children across Ireland, telling them what they need to know, taking questions and giving very practical advice on how to protect your personal information and stay safe online."
